SGD64 - 2008 Pop/Rock Highlights

<img src="http://sgdeaf.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1037354/0x0_1473826.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />A few hours before the new year, some of the highlights from the last year.

First, the returns: the return to acoustic ballads of the Smashing Pumpkins, the phantasmagorical return of Portishead (probably the best album of the year) and the return to religious rock n' roll by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds (and that amazing mustache...).

Portugal is represented by Os Pontos Negros (the Portuguese equivalent of The Strokes, so so album, great single), and the post-rock of Peixe : Avião and Linda Martini.

The amazing confirmation of TV On The Radio and the revelation of Bon Iver are also high marks in the best albums section.

Enjoy!
01 - The Notwist - Good Lies (The Devil You And Me 2008)
02 - Smashing Pumpkins - The Rose March (American Gothic EP 2008)
03 - Os Pontos Negros - Conto de Fadas de Sintra a Lisboa (Magnífico Material Inútil 2008)

05 - Fujiya & Miyagi - Uh (Lightbulbs 2008)
06 - Portishead - Magic Doors (Third 2008)
07 - Peixe : Avião - A Espera É Um Arame (40.20 2008)

SGD 62 - Robert Wyatt

<img src="http://sgdeaf.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1037354/0x0_1437484.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />Robert Wyatt 's music is a delicious mix of experimental pop and jazz.

First as the drummer and vocalist in the prog-jazz-rockers Soft Machine, here with the beginning of the A-side sequence from their second album. Pop absurdity (even the alphabet can be sung) and avant-jazz at its best.

Its solo work came after an accident that keeps him in a wheelchair since then (before there was a experimental jazz instrumental album that Wyatt himself does not consider cannon). The pop is still there, only mellower, political and less wild. The jazz also keeps present but there's no rock anymore.

"Sea Song" is the begin of its heartbreaking masterpiece "Rock Bottom", a ethereal mellow song with only Richard Sinclair (on bass) and Wyatt playing an array of keyboards.

"Sonia" is a (much) lighter jazz instrumental dominated by the Mongezi Feza's trumpet. A genial cover of Elvis Costello's "Shipbuilding" follows. An example of the mix of the (slightly) commercial covers Wyatt did at the time, and an example of a political statement that later became a dominant element in its music.

Jumping to the last three albums (putting a 40 years career in 30 minutes requires this jumps). Three straight amazing albums of mature jazz-pop. The dream-like "A Sunday in Madrid", the cool jazz of "Old Europe" and, finally, a version (between hundreds) of the Che Guevara's anthem "Hasta Siempre Comandante" that is surprisingly successful adding to the original latin feel the jazz and Wyatt's peculiar voice.

Enjoy!

Not saying that this isn't challenging music: Van Morrison's "Sweet Thing" is full of conflicting instrumentation, John Lennon's "Working Class Hero" is as tension driven as his rockers, Leonard Cohen's "Sing Another Son, Boys" is one of the most emotionally intense songs you can hear.

Enjoy!
01 - Joni Mitchell - Little Green (Blue 1971)
02 - Van Morrison - Sweet Thing (Astral Weeks 1968)
03 - Nick Drake - Cello Song (Five Leaves Left 1969)
04 - John Lennon - Working Class Hero (Plastic Ono Band 1970)
05 - Damien Rice - Delicate (O 2002)
06 - Seu Jorge - Rock N' Roll Suicide (The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions 2005)
07 - Bob Dylan - Simple Twist Of Fate (Blood On The Tracks 1974)
08 - Leonard Cohen - Sing Another Song, Boys (Songs Of Love And Hate 1971)

<img src="http://sgdeaf.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1037354/0x0_1375998.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />And I'm back (one more time). Let's see if this time I can post on the weekly basis I initially thought.

For this return, we're on familiar territory: the post-punk. Abrasive, noisy post punk.

More in a week (I hope...).

Enjoy!

SGD 58 - Peaceful Electronic

<img src="http://sgdeaf.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1037354/0x0_1004931.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />This one is a lot about nostalgia. A few years ago I was really into electronic music, especially this kind of slower, peaceful good spirited bands.

Featured are two beautiful songs: Nitin Sawhney's organic fusion of electronic and world music (before turning the auto-pilot on the next records) and Flunk, with one of the best covers ever recorded, one that really reworks the original keeping it recognisable. Chari Chari tropicallia/jazz mix is just beautiful, a pearl in a uneven album.

There is also space for three of my favourite albums ever. First, the night-masterpiece "Midnight Sound" by Flanger. It's one of those albums that are definitely not for every taste, but it's quietness is just magic for me.

Air's "Moon Safari" is one of those very rare perfect albums. Filled with perfect pop (even in the instrumentals) is one of the reasons I've learned how to play bass. The opener track, "La Femme d'Argent" is perfect bass + keyboard music.

Finally, the "once in a lifetime" (unfortunately) Peace Orchestra. The track I chose is the single and it's really different from the rest of the album, but it's just as amazing and filled with the spirit that made the album so special.

Enjoy!
01 - Flanger - Nightbeat 1 (Midnight Sound 2000)
02 - Nitin Sawhney - Letting Go (Beyond Skin 1999)
03 - Air - La Femme d'Argent (Moon Safari 1998)
04 - Chari Chari - Across the Universe (Spring To Summer 2000)
05 - Flunk - Blue Monday (For Sleepyheads Only 2002)
06 - Peace Orchestra - Shining (Peace Orchestra 1999)

SGD57 - Live Prog Rock

<img src="http://sgdeaf.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1037354/0x0_981785.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />First, sorry about last week's missing episode. Spare time is something hard to find, nowadays.

About his week's episode, a look back to this podcast's first episode: live rock from the 70's (with one track from the 60's). The difference is that, this time, only prog-rock tracks are featured. The first visible consequence is the short tracklist, inevitable as all the tracks pass the 10 minutes mark.

The Deep Purple track is from the infamous "Concert For Group And Orchestra" live album but don't fear, it doesn't even include the orchestra and rocks really hard. Before becoming one of heavy metal's greatest bands, they had already wrote some amazing songs, and the epic "Child In Time" cam very well be the best song they ever wrote.

The King Crimson track is from one of the concerts released in the "The Collectable King Crimson" and it's from the "Red" era. It's one of the best live albums I've ever heard and its sound quality, execution and tracklist are all perfect. The "Asbury Park" is an improvised track that shows all the power of this King Crimson incarnation, where the improvised tracks are as memorable as the album tracks.

Finally, Genesis live in the Peter Gabriel era. Recorded in the "Foxtrot" era, it features an amazing "Musical Box", full with dynamic and as powerful as Genesis ever get.

Enjoy!
01 - Deep Purple - Child In Time (Concerto For Group And Orchestra 1969)
02 - King Crimson - Asbury Park (Live in Asbury Park 1974)
03 - Genesis - Musical Box (Live 1973)
